After leaving Philippi, Paul and Silas travel through Amphipolis and Apollonia before arriving in Thessalonica.

There Paul enters the synagogue and reasons directly from the Scriptures concerning the promised Christ.

Biblical Significance: Paul enters the synagogue and reasons from the Scriptures for three Sabbath days. He explains and demonstrates that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead, proclaiming Jesus as the Christ. Some believe, while others respond with jealousy and stir up opposition in the city.

The Biblical Record

Acts 17:1–9

Paul and Silas pass through Amphipolis and Apollonia and arrive at Thessalonica, where there is a synagogue.

Paul enters according to his custom and reasons with the people from the Scriptures for three Sabbath days.

He explains and demonstrates that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead.

He proclaims that Jesus is the promised Christ.

Some are persuaded and join Paul and Silas, including many devout Greeks and prominent women.

Paul did not base his message merely on personal experience or persuasive personality. He took his listeners back to God's written Word.

He Proclaimed Jesus

The purpose of Paul's reasoning was to show from Scripture that the promised Messiah had to suffer and rise again. His conclusion was clear: Jesus is the Christ.

Three Sabbath Days

Reasoning, Explaining, Demonstrating

Paul remained long enough to engage the people carefully.

He reasoned. He explained. He demonstrated. He proclaimed.

Museum Observation: Paul did not fear careful examination of the Scriptures. Biblical truth can withstand sincere investigation.

A House Becomes Involved

Jason Pays a Price

Jason had welcomed Paul and Silas into his home.

When the hostile crowd cannot find Paul and Silas, Jason and other believers are dragged before the city officials.

Museum Observation: Hospitality became participation in the mission. Jason's home became identified with the Gospel Paul proclaimed.

The Accusation

Paul's opponents accuse the missionaries of causing disruption wherever they go.

The Gospel confronted loyalties, assumptions, beliefs, and ways of life.

Museum Reflection: The Gospel always demands a response because it declares that Jesus is Lord.
