Observing the heavy, iron-studded sandals of a Roman legionary reveals how believers maintain ground in battle.
Sitting quietly on a stone bench, Paul looks down at the heavy military sandals (*caligae*) worn by the centurion standing before him. The thick leather is caked with dust and mud from a long march, and the iron hobnails embedded in the soles tell a story of countless miles walked over rugged terrain.
In ancient combat, a soldier who lost his footing was easily overthrown. The Roman boot was engineered specifically to grip the earth, allowing the soldier to hold his ground under the fierce push of an enemy shield wall. Paul recognizes the profound spiritual parallel: the believer's stability in spiritual warfare does not come from clever maneuvering, but from being firmly anchored in the peace of the Gospel.
