The Breastplate of Judgment
Exodus 28 gives detailed instructions for the high priest's garments. Upon the breastplate were to be set twelve precious stones arranged in four rows.
Scripture does not leave the significance of the twelve stones unexplained: they corresponded to the names of the sons of Israel.
One Stone for Each Name
Each stone was engraved like a signet with a name according to the twelve tribes. The tribes were therefore represented individually upon the breastplate.
The pattern that began with Jacob's twelve sons and appeared again in the twelve covenant pillars now enters the priestly ministry.
Carried Over His Heart
One of the most striking details is the location of the breastplate. Aaron was to bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart when he entered the holy place.
Exodus 28:29 describes this as a memorial before the LORD continually. The twelve were not merely counted; their names were carried before God.
The Biblical Trail Continues
Our investigation has now followed twelve through three distinct settings: the family of Jacob, the covenant at Sinai, and the ministry of the high priest.
In each case the number remains connected with the tribes of Israel, yet the setting and purpose deepen as the biblical story unfolds.
