Corinth — Paul Ministers in Corinth

After leaving Athens, Paul arrives in Corinth, one of the major commercial centers of the Roman world.

Here he meets Aquila and Priscilla, works alongside them as a tentmaker, reasons in the synagogue, and establishes a ministry that will have lasting influence.

Biblical Significance: Corinth becomes one of Paul's most important ministry centers. He works with Aquila and Priscilla, reasons in the synagogue, proclaims Jesus as the Christ, and remains in the city for a year and six months. Many Corinthians hear the Gospel, believe, and are baptized.

The Biblical Record

Acts 18:1–17

Paul leaves Athens and comes to Corinth.

There he meets Aquila, a Jew born in Pontus, and his wife Priscilla.

Because they share the same trade, Paul stays and works with them.

Every Sabbath Paul reasons in the synagogue and persuades Jews and Greeks.

When Silas and Timothy arrive from Macedonia, Paul devotes himself more fully to proclaiming that Jesus is the Christ.

Many Corinthians hear, believe, and are baptized.

Aquila and Priscilla

A Shared Trade

Paul meets Aquila and Priscilla in Corinth. They share the same occupation, and Paul lives and works with them. Their workshop becomes more than a place of employment.

A Lasting Partnership

Aquila and Priscilla become important partners in the expanding Gospel mission. Their relationship with Paul will continue beyond Corinth and appear again later in Acts.

Work and Ministry

Paul Worked With His Hands

Paul did not separate ordinary work from God's calling.

He worked as a tentmaker while continuing to reason, preach, teach, and strengthen believers.

Museum Observation: The workplace itself can become part of the mission field. Paul's hands supported his work, while his life and words continued pointing people toward Christ.

“Do Not Be Afraid”

Paul has already experienced opposition, beating, imprisonment, threats, and forced departures.

In Corinth, the Lord speaks to Paul in a vision.

“Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you.”

Extended Ministry

A Year and Six Months

Corinth is not merely another short stop.

Paul remains for eighteen months, teaching the Word of God among the people.

Museum Reflection: Some seasons of ministry involve constant movement. Others require staying, teaching, building, and laying foundations.

Opposition Before Gallio

Paul Is Brought Before the Judgment Seat

Opposition eventually brings Paul before Gallio, proconsul of Achaia.

His accusers attempt to turn the Gospel dispute into a civil matter.

Gallio refuses to become involved in what he considers an internal religious dispute.

Journey Trophy

The Tentmaker's Needle and Open Scroll

The symbolic artifact of MJ2-009 represents Paul's remarkable combination of ordinary labor and extraordinary calling.

The needle represents work. The open scroll represents the Word. Together they remind us that Paul's occupation and ministry were not enemies.

Corinth Required Paul to Stay

Much of Paul's journey had involved arriving, preaching, facing opposition, and moving onward.

Corinth was different.

God told Paul not to be afraid and not to remain silent.

Paul stayed. He worked. He taught. He planted. He strengthened.
