Biblical Significance: At Lystra Paul meets Timothy, a young disciple whose faith and character are well spoken of by the believers in Lystra and Iconium. Paul chooses Timothy to accompany the missionary team, beginning a relationship that will become one of the most important discipleship partnerships in the New Testament.

“Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek.”

“He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium.”

A New Companion

Meet Timothy

A Disciple Before Paul Arrived

Acts introduces Timothy as a disciple. His faith was already present before Paul invited him to travel. Timothy was not simply selected because Paul needed another traveler. A work of God was already visible in his life.

A Good Reputation

Timothy was well spoken of by believers in both Lystra and Iconium. His character had been observed by others. Before Timothy carried greater responsibility, his faithfulness was already known locally.

Discipleship

Paul Sees Something in Timothy

Paul had already experienced hardship, persecution, church planting, opposition, and the faithfulness of God.

Now a younger believer joins him. Timothy will learn not merely through teaching, but by traveling with Paul, serving beside him, witnessing ministry firsthand, and participating in the strengthening of the churches.

Someone Saw What Timothy Could Become

Timothy appears in Acts as a young disciple with a good reputation among believers.

Paul sees more than who Timothy is at that moment. He sees someone who can travel, serve, learn, teach, strengthen churches, and eventually carry significant responsibility in the kingdom of God.

Sometimes the future of ministry is standing quietly among today's disciples.

The question is whether someone will recognize them, encourage them, walk beside them, and give them an opportunity to grow.

Who Are You Helping to Grow?

Paul's ministry was not only about preaching to crowds. He invested deeply in people.

Timothy would eventually become one of Paul's closest fellow workers. But that relationship had a beginning. It began when Paul recognized a faithful young disciple in Lystra.

Consider: Is there someone God has placed around you whom you could encourage, teach, mentor, pray for, or invite to serve alongside you?
